How does professional pest control work?

A pro starts with an inspection to identify the pest and find how it’s getting in. They then treat with the right method - baits, targeted sprays, traps or exclusion - and schedule follow-ups so the problem doesn’t return.

  • Inspect - identify the pest, entry points and severity.
  • Treat - apply the method matched to that pest.
  • Prevent - seal entry points and set a monitoring schedule.

How to vet the company

Before the treatment plan matters, the licence does. The EPA advises checking that the pest control operator’s licence is current where your state requires one, and suggests contacting your state pesticide agency to ask about its certification and training programmes and whether periodic recertification is required of operators. The same fact sheet tells you to call your state or local pesticide regulatory agency, or a local consumer office, to find out whether complaints have been filed against the company. Both calls are free and neither depends on anything the company tells you.

Common questions

Pest control basics

Pest control is the management of insects, rodents and wildlife that damage property or threaten health. It ranges from prevention and monitoring to targeted treatment and exclusion, done as a one-time visit or on a recurring plan.
Most homes do well on a quarterly plan, with monthly service for heavy or seasonal pressure. One-time treatments suit a single, contained problem. Your local company recommends a schedule based on your pests and climate.
Licensed technicians apply EPA-registered products at approved rates and can advise on ventilation and re-entry times. Tell your provider about children, pets, pregnancy or allergies so they can adjust the plan.
